Automated carton handling on 30,000 sqm

Osnabrück, 27.03.2019. The fashion logistics specialist Meyer & Meyer, based in Osnabrück, Germany, will increasingly focus on automation solutions in the future and has built a new, automated shuttle warehouse for this purpose. The innovative storage and retrieval system from the manufacturer Vanderlande has been integrated into the existing logistics hall at the Meyer & Meyer site in Peine and forms the heart of a system that enables fully automated handling of carton goods over a total area of 30,000 m². Meyer & Meyer has invested a total of 11 million euros in the new technology.

The new, automated small parts warehouse offers, in addition to full carton unwinding, individual parts unwinding and has - depending on the carton size used - more than 80,000 to 100,000 static storage spaces, whereby the cartons can be stored single-deep or double-deep depending on their size. In a total of 12 rack aisles, two different shuttle types ensure automated handling: five devices per aisle of the "Microshuttle" type and four shuttles per aisle of the high-performance "Quickstore HDS" model guarantee fast storage and retrieval of classic B2B goods with consolidation processes as well as goods for marketplaces and end customers. "We plan to almost double the volume handled in Peine. The new shuttle warehouse optimises the flow of goods, improves throughput times and ensures fast and secure handling even with growing volumes," says Meyer & Meyer CEO Jan Weber. In addition to the flexible handling of B2B and B2C goods, the energy-efficient system also offers a high degree of scalability: Since the micro shuttles are not limited to one warehouse level and can also move between the shelf levels using a lift, the warehouse can easily be expanded with increasing throughput rates so that the warehouse technology can be adapted to changed order structures without any problems if required.

"For Meyer & Meyer, the shuttle warehouse is a further step in the automation of our logistics processes and at the same time fulfils the increasing flexibility requirements of this very dynamic industry. With the supplier Vanderlande, we have been able to cooperate very professionally in this project with a reliable partner in the field of logistics process automation," says Dr. Stephan Hülsmann, Manager Logistics Planning & Development.
